Since 2014, Akkodis has delivered AWS Cloud Managed Services to enterprises and government agencies across the globe — over a decade of continuous operations, zero-compromise security, and measurable cost optimisation. If your organisation runs critical workloads on AWS, you don’t have to manage them alone.

Running critical workloads on AWS is a full-time job — one that demands round-the-clock expertise, continuous security vigilance, and cost discipline that most enterprises simply cannot maintain in-house. Continual upskilling with training & development, certification and study, security challenges, patching, cost optimisation, architectural changes, and more are areas in the Shared Responsibility Model that fall to you, the cloud customer — or your managed services provider of choice. Akkodis has been doing exactly this since 2014, for enterprises and government agencies running some of the world’s most demanding digital systems.

Akkodis offers a managed services approach in three ways: with our staff physically embedded at your site(s); centrally from the Akkodis Service Center closest to you; or from our Global Operations locations. On-site, On-shore, Near-shore, Off-shore.

Let’s have a look at an example of where you have responsibility in the cloud, using a set of workloads deployed for an enterprise:

It takes a lot of skill and attention to detail to keep the cloud simple, secure, scalable, and cost effective over an extended period.

At Akkodis, we split cloud engagements into a few different areas:

  1. Traditional application managed services: operating your (COTS) digital workload, across one or more AWS accounts.
  2. DevOps-powered application managed services: for bespoke applications where you have source code and custom requirements, particularly around solutions that are tailored to your line-of-business and perhaps are mission-critical to your organisation
  3. Cloud Operations: providing the governance, security (SecOps), and financial control (FinOps) of your AWS Cloud estate, helping reduce your security risk and optimising cloud costs
Not only does Akkodis Managed Services operate some of the largest digital systems for our enterprise commercial clients but is also responsible for the operational systems for multiple government agencies worldwide in law enforcement, lands industry, transport, education, health, and more. Akkodis patches, updates, maintains and modernizes these systems for the ongoing security and reliability of our clients.

We work seamlessly with the [Akkodis] team – even though they are our service provider, our strong working relationships make us one team.

Keep your COTS software running securely, patched, and cost-optimised — without the internal overhead

Many clients run commercial off the shelf software (COTS) on virtual machines in a cloud provider environment. These deployments still require correct maintenance and updates, of both the application, the operating system, as well as any load balancing, encryption protocols and TLS certificates. These workloads also often have a relational database, some persistent storage, as well as traditional backup routines. They’re exposed to either external public audiences over the internet, or possibly private audiences via VPNs and private fibre connectivity.

While the underlying cloud environment has its own Service Level Agreements (SLAs), they don’t operate a full service, leaving you with the option of running these workloads yourself, or handing the operational responsibility to a managed services provider (MSP).

Of course, Akkodis likes to go slightly further than just leaving the lights on.

Where possible, we like to simplify the human effort, by leveraging as much of the cloud managed services as possible, to run your workload. Managed Databases, Managed Load Balancing, and templated deployments make the effort to run — and update — these workloads a lower human effort, thereby reducing your Total Cost of Operation (TCO). We’re also well aware of how legacy COTS packages may require legacy ways of operating, such as saving and sharing data, or authenticating users, which may be inflating your TCO because of these software limitations.

We also like to export logs from application servers to reliable log services, and strive to be leaving no data of value on the individual virtual machines. Our step beyond this is to deploy using AutoScale, providing the flexibility to have zero downtime rolling updates where feasible. We also like to have workload health metrics, both technical and business level, defined with thresholds on alarms and escalations.

We offer this service either on-site from your location, on-shore from our in-country locations, near-shore on the same continent, or off-shore.

Your bespoke, mission-critical applications deserve automated pipelines, minimal downtime, and a team that treats them as their own

For many organisations, if they have a bespoke application(s) deployed, then they are likely connected to their core business. Logistics, asset tracking, banking, patient data. These are the critical systems, that require even more attention to detail. Their downtime can mean significant financial or reputational impact to the client.

  • CI/CD pipelines: reduce the time and cost of deploying changes to your environments
  • Automated testing gates: block if automated tests show issues
  • Rolling deployments: minimise the interruption from updates

This is where Akkodis applies deep DevOps capability, with automated pipelines for software build, testing, approval and deployment, with downtime minimised.

Governance, security, and financial control across your entire AWS estate — not just individual workloads

There’s a key area of AWS Cloud Administration that often gets forgotten. While digital workloads run in various segregated environments (shown above), there remains the administration of the overarching cloud estate. We consider this Cloud Operations (CloudOps) — shown above as the top layer.

CloudOps ranges from security testing and alerting, solution architecture and security governance, to financial operations (FinOps). Akkodis often takes a top-down and bottom-up approach to optimise all of these aspects: Cloud Ops management is the top-down component (and DevOps teams is the bottom-up approach).

Akkodis pioneered CloudOps in 2014, taking responsibility for the entire AWS Cloud landscape of one of Australia’s largest government organisations. More than ten years later, we remain their trusted partner for Cloud Operations, DevOps, and Traditional Managed Services — a testament to the trust built through consistent, secure, and cost-effective delivery.

When engaged as a managed services provider to our clients, Akkodis undertakes the planning build and management of hybrid cloud environments. This is done with a view to continuous evolution of services over the span of the engagement, drawing on the experience of the past to try to avoid unnecessary downtime as services evolve.

From the very start of your first digital workload being deployed into the AWS Cloud, Akkodis takes strict architectural governance optimisation to validate Total Cost of Operation, while also paying very close attention to just the AWS cost component of that TCO.

With a regular cadence, Akkodis reviews ongoing costs, making incremental improvements to take both billing actions, deployment changes, and architectural changes to bring ongoing cost optimisation to our clients.

Akkodis manages cloud costs to be over 100x more effective than the 2023 industry standard for AWS Cloud managed service providers, lowering your total cost of operation (measured by our service costs and compared to our clients managed AWS spend). Ask us how we did this.

Data is key to understanding the current state of a workload; with all deployments, Akkodis looks for the technical and business metrics that can be derived to try and quantify the status and wrap these within alarm and escalation thresholds that notify assigned teams, who can triage and rectify issues before they become incidents.

Akkodis has previously worked with clients to undertake and hold compliance with ISO27001 for services deployed and operated by Akkodis within AWS. We work with auditors to understand the shared responsibility model, to understand existing AWS Artifact documents that help accelerate audits, and provide evidence such as deployment templates to further show security configuration and compliance.

Akkodis has long used DevOps approaches of CI/CD, templating, testing and repeatability, to power its AWS Cloud Managed Services; we provide this aligned to a clients IT Service Management levels, with Service Level Agreements, Service Level Objectives, and best intentions to provide excellence in AWS Cloud operations.

The Akkodis Service Center is a centralized virtual helpdesk, staffed out of the Akkodis offices across multiple timezones and countries.

Our team remotely assists clients with all manner of operational support enquiries, and by way of secured remote access to client environments, can mediate issues and work them to resolution, all under an ITIL process with issue management tracking.

These days, there is a lot of AI options available, and we take a governance-first approach to their use. Akkodis wants to arm our team with these time and cost saving tools to your benefit — provided this is validated and approved by our clients and their policies. Where possible, we execute these tools in the context of your (client) account or tenancy. We continuously review and assess tooling, looking at data disclosure, jurisdiction and sovereignty, cost and value; this is yet another area of the tech industry that is not standing still.

What to expect in the first 90 days

We know changing managed services providers can be a difficult time for organisations. There is a lot of knowledge to capture and transfer. The initial transition in (or final transition out) is a delicate period, and we scale up our team during this phase as part of our Hypercare committment to our clients. Among the early activities is agreeing a timeline of handover, stablisation, and urgent actions and remediations that simply must happen immediately.

During this Hypercare period we aim to:

  • Discover: understand exactly what everything does, and how, as well as the dependancies and priorities for your workloads
  • Stabilise: if services are flapping, then bring them under control
  • Remediate: identify the most serious things that need urgent attention
  • Optimise: start the process to maintain the digital solutions

We’ve transitioned in and out of clients hundreds of times; we have a repeatable approach that has given great customer reassurance during these periods of change.
